Vienna: More Than Just a Postcard

Imperial landmarks, waterside afternoons, and vineyard evenings woven into one warmer city guide.

See the city differently

The Vienna between the landmarks

Vienna. The name itself conjures images of imperial palaces, waltzing couples, and grand coffee houses. And while all of that is wonderfully true, there's another side to this city.

It lives and breathes along the waters of the Danube, in laughter-filled evenings at a cozy wine tavern, and in quiet moments watching the city lights from a hilltop.

This guide is your invitation to experience Vienna not just as a tourist, but as a local for a few unforgettable days. It's for the solo traveler charting their own course and for couples writing a new chapter together.

A more personal Vienna

The Danube's embrace: Donauinsel & Alte Donau

When the sun comes out, head to Donauinsel. This 21.1 km island is Vienna’s open-air playground for cycling, relaxing by the water, and summer events like Donauinselfest.

Right by the U1 station Donauinsel, Copa Beach brings beach-bar vibes to the Neue Donau, and next door the new Pier 22 adds food, sports, and sunsets right on the water.

For a calmer pace, the Alte Donau is perfect: rent an electric or rowing boat at Marina Hofbauer and glide across the quiet water until the city feels far away.

Vienna in summer

Cocktails by the canal, a boat ride on the Alte Donau, and enough room in the day to stay by the water a little longer.

A glass with a view

Sit among the vines with a glass of Viennese white and a classic snack platter — a Nussberg summer evening at its best.

A toast to the city: Kahlenberg & Nussberg

For breathtaking views, hike up Kahlenberg in the Vienna Woods and enjoy a panorama across the city and the Danube.

Then walk down through the Nussberg vineyards and discover a true Viennese tradition: the Heuriger wine tavern.

Three favorites line the way: Buschenschank Feuerwehr Wagner on the Nussberg with sweeping views over the Danube, Weingut Wailand sitting right in the vineyards above Kahlenbergerdorf, and the classic Heuriger Sirbu on Kahlenberger Straße.

Urban waterside: the Danube Canal

Vienna’s most laid-back shoreline runs straight through the city — street art, promenades, and one summer spot after another.

Dig your feet into the sand at Strandbar Herrmann in Herrmannpark, Klyo at the Urania serves everything from breakfast to dinner by the water, and Summerstage at Roßauer Lände pairs open-air pavilions with long summer evenings.

Coffee house & breakfast

Arriving in Vienna properly means a long breakfast at a coffee house — take your time, order a Melange, and stay a while.

Café Ritter Ottakring is the classic neighborhood coffee house just around the corner from our 17th-district apartment, Café Sperl has been a Viennese institution since 1880 — and for a modern breakfast by the water, head to Klyo at the Urania.
